    Helpful Plumbing Tips

    Water Facts:

To lower utility bills use low flow toilets, which use 20% less water per flush, and combine that with an efficient shower head, which also uses 20% less water.
If every house in America and Canada had a drip every second, 928 million gallons of water would be wasted per day. Be aware of shutting off the water when brushing your teeth, shaving, and washing the dishes, as this will also conserve water.
When the shower pressure seems weak, put a plastic bag filled with vinegar over the shower head over night. In the morning use a toothbrush to gently scrub off the mineral deposits; this will help restore water flow.

    Garbage Disposal Care:

Turn on the garbage disposal before adding food debris.
Carrots, celery, onion, banana peels, egg shells, and even pumpkin pulp do not break up well when put down the garbage disposal. Pumpkin pulp will actually harden and clog the line.
Try to avoid pouring fats or cooking oils down the drain, as they will only produce clogs in the drain.
Garbage disposal motors can overheat just like a car. During use and for 15 seconds after unit is turned off, run cold water to keep the motor cool and to flush the remaining food waste from the line.
Occasionally grind some ice in the disposal to keep the blades sharp. To keep drains smelling clean, grind the rind from citrus fruits or use ProClean drain care products.
Emergency Shut-off Valves: Knowing where your shut-off valves are can help keep destruction to a minimum when water or gas is leaking. Washington Sewer and Drain Plumbing technicians carry tags with them and will be happy to install and label these during our Home Inspection.
The main shut-off valve is located wherever the water supply is coming into the house.
On a well, find the circuit breaker and turn the power source off to the well.
Throughout the house, every fixture and appliance should have a shut-off valve as well.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Water Heater:

If you would like a more efficient water heater, switch to a high efficiency unit.
If you run out of hot water quickly due to high demand, consider upgrading to a quick recovery or a tankless water heater.
If there is a whirlpool tub in the house, use a 50+/- gallon tank size or larger.

    Fall Safety Tips

Check outside faucet for leaks or drips and make the needed repairs before the freezing months occur. Disconnect all hoses from outside faucets as they could freeze and expand causing damage to your home’s interior. If you have any internal shut-off valves be sure to turn them off.
If you have an existing shut-off valve, be sure to use it.
If the home has interior shutoff valves for the outside faucets, shut them off.
Try covering the outside faucets with a faucet insulation kit.
Apply heat tape or heat cables around pipes that are in places where its not heated to prevent them from freezing.
Check around your house for air infiltration from unsealed door and windows. Pipes that are not insulated and are subject to freezing temperatures can cause big problems. Attics, crawlspace’s and garages commonly have exposed piping. Inexpensive pipe insulation can be purchased from your plumber or at a local home improvement store. In some cases heat tape can be used to keep the pipes from freezing.

    Winter Safety Tips

Try splitting up showers throughout the day or waiting 10 minutes between each shower to ensure that hot water is available to each family member.
During the cold months, turn up the water heater slightly to help retain hot water. Don’t turn up the temperature past 125˚ F or the water could scald the skin.
